One would think flying home to see family would be such an easy task. I’m here to tell you that it can be. I am traveling solo with two kids. I see mom’s traveling solo with four kids and my hats off to them!! Traveling with kids, well, it sucks. You have to mentally prepare yourself for the shit show it can be. I feel like going into it, expecting it to be a disaster is way better than thinking it will be pure bliss.
Before going I have to map out what we will be doing. This trip will be the longest time out there. We will be in Idaho for a whole month. Normally our trips are a week to 10 days. I also try to do some kind of vendor event when I’m home too so I can write off my portion of my trip as a business expense. This trip my kids want to go camping with Grandpa, go fishing, go to the water park. And, my 20 year High School Reunion is also happening when we are home.
I make 4 lists. Amazon, pack, carry on, and ship.
My Amazon List:
The first thing I do is try to figure out what big items I will need when we are there. Since I have 2 kids in car seats I make sure I have a couple line up. I know we have one for Katelyn so I will need to add a car seat to my Amazon list and we will keep it at my Dad’s for future trips. If you are visiting family, try to arrange for a car seat when you land, because traveling with them is a nightmare. Katelyn is still in pull ups at night, another item on my Amazon list. With this being such a long trip I will also order my kids toiletries.
I will start packing a couple days before hand. I like to lay everything out and make sure I’m not forgetting anything. Make sure kids have enough clothes for whatever we get into. Make sure I pack gym clothes, clothes in case I go out with friends, and clothes to lounge in. I also need to figure out what shoes to pack too. Pool, camping, playing, if we go to my aunt’s farm. Do you see why I take a few days to pack!?!
Ahh in flight entertainment. Are their iPad’s charged? Is my computer charged? Is my iPad charged since that has their movies on it? I need to make sure Joey has books to read and Katelyn has coloring books and crayons. I usually make a quick trip to Target and raid their $1 section for a couple items for them. I will also buy Joey a book or two, so he has something he hasn’t read yet. I also want to make sure I have an extra set of clothes and snacks. The last thing I want to do is buy over priced food my kids won’t eat, ya feel me?
I don’t typically ship anything back home. There really isn’t a point when I have Amazon and FREE shipping! But, if I do a vendor event then I need to ship my products. I have to take inventory of what I have and order what I don’t. I will order when I get to Idaho and have it shipped directly there. I may even ship a few extras as well depends on how much I end up needing to pack.
I love going home and visiting my family. I miss them all the time and I want my kids to know my family like they do my husbands. I only wish we could live by both our families. I am so happy that I am able to leave for a month to be with my family. I don’t have to ask for time off, and I can work from Idaho if I want. I’m not stressed out about losing my job and I can go see my family when I want and for how long I want.
